My Cousin & Friend, Marie (From Greta)

Marie and her sister Edna have always been like big sisters to my sister Finley and me. As a young child with long hair, Marie liked to comb and put my ponytail up high on my head. As we grew older, she would often take us shopping, bowling or to a movie. Lunch would follow. Marie wanted us to experience many things that we would not have experienced otherwise. I remember many A’s games with my Tso cousins as well as staying overnight during the summer or weekends and baking homemade cinnamon bread and other delicious treats. I remember going to Lehr’s Greenhouse in San Francisco, eating crepes at the Magic Pan and even Marie nudging me to make sure that I was awake to stand up for the Hallelujah Chorus at the Handel’s Messiah Symphony performance at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. Marie attended my children’s Birthday parties. Since her birthday was in between my two daughter’s birthdays, we would sing Happy Birthday to her also and have a candle on a dessert for her to blow out. For the past several years, my relationship with Marie grew even closer. I will always cherish the many CSI (cousins, sisters, and in-laws) weekends we had together. Since Marie and I enjoyed many of the same foods, we would often order different dishes to share with each other: Noodle dishes, Wonton/Dumpling Soup, Salt and Pepper Calamari and Chicken wings. We ate Philly Cheesesteak type sandwiches, Panna Cotta, Porchetta sandwiches at the Roli Roti Food truck, omelettes and pizza that included fresh basil as one of its ingredients. Most of all, we enjoyed Dim Sum. Marie knew the best Dim Sum take out places in San Francisco Chinatown. We often would buy far too much so that we could share our favorites with one another. We called it our “cheap eats.” Our CSI also enjoyed playing Mahjong together. I can still picture Marie holding her head saying “Dilemma!” She wasn’t sure what tile she wanted to discard or what strategy to use in that round. She would still win the game many times. I would kid her by saying “Just to let you know, I haven’t won a game today yet!” One time she even said it back to me! On one occasion, we went to Grant Ave in SF Chinatown to look for Mahjong charms or trinkets. We found some in a shop, and although Marie picked up the “one of dots” first, she let me buy it. It was very selfless of her. We always called it “Big Dot” when the tile was thrown out. It was one of our favorite MJ tiles. We laughed a lot as a family of Lum’s/Tso’s. My last recollection of having extreme laughter was when Marie was describing the Wimpy Kid 3 movie that she saw in the theatre with Maggie and Stella. Marie must have really enjoyed the movie! I will truly miss my cousin and friend, Marie. I am so grateful and thankful for her. Love, Greta
