Marie Yee Tso Dong was born on December 12, 1950 in Hong Kong to Eddie and Jean Tso. She was the second of 4 children. When the Tso family came to America, they settled in Oakland, California. It was here that Marie would later attend Skyline High School and develop lifelong friendships. As a Junior at Skyline, Marie attended the Chinese Bible Church and came to know Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She would enthusiastically share with her younger relatives about how she was now “saved” and it was her promptings that resulted in many family members coming to the church and committing to the Christian faith. Were it not for Marie and the resulting marriages, births, and influences in and by the Tso/Lum families, many Bay Area Chinese Bible Church leaders and members would not exist. When Marie graduated from Skyline High, she chose to attend Mills College with many of her friends from church. She would later pursue a career with the City of Oakland instead of completing Mills. In 1983, Marie transferred to work at the Port of Oakland. She began her career with the Port as an Intermediate Typist Clerk and rose to the position of Senior Port Personnel Analyst. During her seventeen years of dedicated service to the Port, Marie met Richard Dong when he was an oral panel rater on one of her exams back in the late 80’s. On July 4, 1999, Marie married Rick in beautiful and romantic Hawaii. Upon retirement in 2000, Marie and Rick would spend their lives traveling to exotic destinations such as New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canton, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Canada, New England and extensively throughout the U.S., but the most enjoyable destination turned out to be right at home in the Bay Area with family. Legendary are her annual Christmas shopping sprees to Hawaii to catch the holiday craft fairs with Aunt Maggie. Marie was passionate about her politics, sports, and grandchildren. Besides spending quality time with her cousins, sister, and in-laws events known as CSI, she frequented restaurants especially ones that would feature noodles: her favorite dish along with Jiu Yim Chicken Wings. While preparing to attend a San Francisco Giants game, Marie would be stricken with a massive brain hemorrhage which could not be overcome. She was taken to Saint Francis Hospital where on September 18, 2012, she entered into eternal rest with her God. Marie is survived by her beloved husband, Richard; sister, Edna; brother, George; step-daughter, Tina and her husband, Matt; grandchildren, Stella and Maggie; and finally many family and friends who will greatly miss her but will preserve her memory. She will be remembered as funny, giving, meticulous, gracious, professional, hard-working and a “big sister” to the cousins.
